Baskonia vs. Real Madrid predictions
Defending champions Real Madrid have been handed a tough start to the new season, with an all-Spanish clash against Baskonia.
The hosts narrowly missed out on the playoffs last season, and will be determined to make up for that disappointment. An opening game win over Real Madrid would be a real statement.
Baskonia beat their opponents 92-86 in this fixture last season, with former Denver Nuggets shooting guard Markus Howard topping the scoring with 28 points.
That was an indication of how strong the Basque outfit are at the Fernando Buesa Arena, where they lost just three of their 17 home games in the 2022/23 regular season.
Joan Peñarroya’s men were the EuroLeague’s top points scorers last season, averaging 86.7 points per game, and also topped the three-pointers made.
Edy Tavares was named Final Four MVP last season, and the center will again look to lead from the front for Real Madrid.
However, Baskonia have the ability in their squad - especially in front of their home supporters - to cause an opening game upset.
Barcelona vs. Anadolu Efes predictions
After making the semifinals last season, Barcelona will be targeting their first EuroLeague title in 12 years. They face a real test, however, as they kick off the new campaign against 2021/22 champions Anadolu Efes.
The Catalans finished second in the regular season standings, ahead of eventual winners Real Madrid – who defeated their major rivals in the last four.
Barcelona, last season’s Spanish League champions, lost just four of their 17 regular season home games. One of those defeats, however, came against Anadolu Efes in Week 19.
On the back of successive EuroLeague titles, the Turkish outfit disappointed last season as they missed out on the playoffs with a 17-17 record.
Anadolu Efes lost star point guard Vasilije Micić in the summer, after he moved to the NBA, with Darius Thompson brought in from Baskonia to replace him.
Efes may struggle to repeat their road success of last season though, with Barcelona’s power forward/center Jan Veselý - a former Washington Wizards star and EuroLeague winner - feeling much more settled now starting his second season at the Palau Blaugrana.
Valencia Basket vs. Monaco predictions
After finishing third last season, Monaco will be confident of challenging for the EuroLeague crown once again, having made a high-profile summer addition.
Monaco, who finished fourth in the regular season, have never won the EuroLeague, but will feel they are getting closer to their maiden title.
Former Boston Celtics, New York Knicks, and Dallas Mavericks’ point guard Kemba Walker is their big new addition, and the four-time NBA All-Star should make an instant impact.
The Red and Whites led the league in two-pointers made last season, and will be looking to make a fast start. They face a Valencia Basket team who finished the 2022/23 season with a losing 15-19 record.
The Spanish outfit lost eight of their 17 regular season home games, and although they beat Monaco by five points in this fixture last term, there could be a different outcome in Week 1.
