The United States.
On May 5, US pharmaceutical giant Pfizer and its German affiliate BioNTech SE said they have already begun supplying their coronavirus vaccine doses to applicants for initial human research in the USA. Trials have started in Germany, too. Gilead Sciences, on the other hand, has developed Remdesivir, a broad-spectrum antiviral drug that is being tested as a specific treatment for COVID-19 infections. The medicine has been allowed for emergency use in the United States and has also been licensed for use in Japan for people with serious coronavirus symptoms. Another pharmaceutical firm, Regeneron said its antibody therapy drug could also be available by September. Moderna, Johnson & Johnson and many other biopharmaceutical firms also have stepped up efforts to create a vaccine for COVID-19. Johnson & Johnson works with the Advanced Research and Development Authority for Biomedicine (BARDA). The company announced in March that it had begun pre-clinical testing on several candidates in Boston and subsequently confirmed that it had chosen its lead vaccine candidate, with two backups.
China
The country where the first outbreak occurred, has announced that it has obtained positive results from animal testing of a new COVID-19 vaccine. Sinovac Biotech, based in Beijing, is negotiating phase III clinical trials of the vaccine with regulators in other nations, and with the World Health Organization, in regions where the novel coronavirus is still circulating rapidly.
In addition to the Sinovac vaccine, Chinese scientists also have three other possible COVID-19 vaccines in clinical trials: one from the Chinese military in partnership with CanSino Biologics Inc., based in Tianjin, and two from the state-owned China National Biotec Company. CanSino also plans to go global with last month's company filing a clinical trial application for its vaccine in Canada.
Italy
Italian researchers have recently reported they have successfully produced a possible vaccine that could contain COVID-19 distributed in humans. The company producing the drug, Luigi Aurisicchio, CEO of Takis, claimed that a coronavirus candidate vaccine developed by them was able to neutralize the virus in human cells for the first time. "This is the most advanced stage of testing a candidate vaccine developed in Italy. Human studies are planned after this summer," Italian news agency ANSA quoted Aurisicchio as saying.
Tests are being performed at the Spallanzani Hospital in Rome, where Takis company researchers succeeded in producing antibodies in mice and hoped it would function on humans as well. A Takis researcher said "as far as we know, we are the first in the world to show coronavirus neutralization with a vaccine so far. We expect this to happen in humans as well."
Israel
Israel's defense minister, Naftali Bennett, said the Israel Biological Research Institute (IIBR) had developed an antibody to neutralize the COVID-19 virus. It can attack and neutralize the virus inside infected bodies.
As of last month, the institute has already started researching the antibody on rodents. In addition, the second research team, MigVax, has completed the first phase of COVID-19 vaccine production and secured an investment of $12 million to improve the vaccine. The defense minister, however, has not specified to conduct any human trials as of now.
India
In India, more than 30 vaccines are in different stages of development, scientists told Legislator Narendra Modi on May 5. The vaccine from the University of Oxford is also being produced with multiple partners including India's Serum Institute. United Kingdom
UK Government has promised EUR 388 million to finance studies, testing, and therapies on vaccines. Scientists at Oxford University's Jenner Institute have stated they have made a potential coronavirus vaccine. The vaccine is being developed with several collaborators including the Indian Serum Institute.
As part of initial trials, interferon beta, a drug developed by the pharmaceutical firm Synairgen was injected into patients. The results of the Interferon Beta injection, used to treat multiple sclerosis, will be delivered by June. Around 31 active case studies are ongoing in the UK for vaccine production.
