There are two categories of visas to travel to the United States. First one is a nonimmigrant visa. This visa is issued to people who want to seek temporary admission to the United States. This visa does not allow you to stay permanently in the United States but visit for a certain duration.

The second class of visa is called Immigrant visa. This visa is issued to people who want to travel to the United States to live permanently.

US visas are issued by the US consulate in your country. In order to get a visa, you fill the application and schedule an in person appointment. The officer at the consulate will interview you and decide if you are eligible to travel to the United States or not.

If you are approved the US consulate will issue you a travel permission document and place it in your passport. This travel document is called a visa or travel visa.

Each travel document or visa has a specific number. This number is called a visa number. This is usually an eight digit number. Sometimes it can be a letter followed by seven numbers. This number is usually on the bottom right hand side of the visa in red.

When you arrive in the United States the border patrol agent will take this visa number and run it through their system to verify that you have been found eligible and given permission to travel to the United States.
