If you are shy about your abilities in this area, then we would say stick to the Classic 60–30–10 rule. The 60% of color is usually a neutral color like beige or gray or greige or white or tan or even a good solid color toned white that can be blue or green toned white. we’d stay away from the yellow or orange toned whites. They can get a bit too bright on a sunny day if you have loads of natural light in Summer.
The 30% color is your second color, so in a blue toned white as 60% the 30% will usually be bolder blues and the green toned white will be bolder greens. You either have to be mindful of the tone of the 60% or be very eclectic with a larger mix of bolder blues that on a combined basis make up the 30%. This is another reason why yellow and orange toned whites are sometimes chosen as the 60% color…often by builders…but hard to work with when you get to phase 2 and 3.
The 10% is your bold splash of a third color and we like to keep that for easily removed things like a carpet or sofa pillows or vases or bedding. Try to keep that 10% WOWest color easily changeable and not in a permanent tile or flooring or often not even paint. They are very had to paint over.
Google 60–30–10 color and you will see images that send you shrieking into the night! In fact look at all of those before you begin so you know what NOT to do.
One of the other popular color theories has to do with the emotional projection of color. That one is also scary, especially when you want a Reiki room and just stepping into the room wakes you up first thing in the morning! They are often Orange and Yellow.
So back to we don’t use color theories. we find we do better without them. we do use a lot of color, but we have an eye for it and most people looking for or adopting theories don’t. So do yourself a favor and google tons of images that used that “theory” before breaking out your wallet for paint and furnishings. You might be better off enlisting the help of someone who has a true eye for it and doesn’t use color theories. Maybe loosely and by accident we step into a color theory, but it would be a surprise to us that it matched a color theory.
