Herceg Novi

Herceg Novi is a coastal town located at the entrance to the Boka Kotorska and at the foot of Mount Orjen.

Herceg Novi is even sometimes called "the city of a thousand steps".

Herceg Novi in Montenegro is famous for its unique atmosphere and historical landmarks.

Built between 1883 and 1905, this beautifully proportioned, domed Orthodox church sits flanked by palm trees at the centre of gleaming white Trg Herceg Stjepana .

During a vacation in Herceg Novi you will enjoy a picturesque Baroque old town, discover some beautiful sights and also the beaches are ideal for swimming.

In addition to the small port, on the coast, there are restaurants with typical Mediterranean cuisine, but there are also specialties of continental Montenegrin cuisine.

Above Škver, the main port, stands the fortress of Forte Mare, which was built in 1382 by the city’s founder, the Bosnian king Tvrtko Kotromanić.

If you want to get to know the local culture and art, climb the Square, which is reached by numerous stone steps.

What is little known is that Petar II Petrovic Njegos finished his primary education in Herceg Novi, and a museum of the Njegos School was opened in that part.

Andrić said that this city of stairs has a special soul because here magic can always be experienced again and again.

What we are extremely glad Nobel Prize winner Ivo Andric built his house in our beautiful Herceg Novi.

The Old Town’s shiny squares, elegant churches and formidable fortresses echo with the clatter of cafes and bars.

The historic walled town of Herceg Novi, close to the Croatian border, is a unique and culturally rich destination that is steeped in rich heritage and breathtaking scenery.

The sun shines brightly on this coastal location, which is known as the ‘City of the Sun’ in recognition of the high number of sunny days that the town enjoys all year round.

The old town in Herceg Novi Montenegro is full of old houses, colorful buildings, local shops, and a ton of restaurants.

If you decide to spend your vacation in Herceg Novi, it is best to think day by day about a new beach to visit, because there are officially 62 of them.

If Herceg Novi is your main destination, a pleasant alternative to bus travel is hiring a Croat cab from Dubrovnik airport for about €50; this trip takes about 40 minutes, including border crossings.

Founded in 1382 as a fortress town Herceg Novi has been ruled over the centuries by the Ottoman Empire, Spain and Venice, as well as more recently by Russia, France and Austria.

Herceg Novi is located directly at the sea and is considered to be the entrance to the famous Bay of Kotor.

At the exit from the bay, there is Lastvica islet rooming Mamula, a well-conserved Austro-Hungarian military fortification.

The popular resort of Mamula is an uninhabited island at the entrance to the Bay of Kotor, about 6 km away from Herceg Novi.

The town lies on the slopes of the Orjen mountain range at the mouth of the Bay of Kotor and borders two countries, that is, Croatia on the one side, and Bosnia and Hercegovina on the other.

With over two hundred sunny days during the year, it is open towards the entrance to one of the most beautiful bays in the world, the Bay of Kotor.

Herceg Novi on the northern Adriatic coast of Montenegro is the "gateway" to the beautiful Bay of Kotor and one of the most important tourist towns in the country.

Because of the southern exposure, location by the sea and, at the foot of a mountain location, Herceg Novi is blessed with its own microclimate in relation to the other places in bay, but also Montenegro in general.

Many of the cities, towns and villages surrounding the bay are rich with historical significance, attracting a number of adventure enthusiasts from around the world to come and explore this region.

There really is something for everyone around the shores of the Bay of Kotor, whether you’re an adventurous hiker, a culture buff or a beach lover.

There are numerous guided bus tours to the Bay of Kotor when staying in Dubrovnik, day trips that offer you a taste of the bay’s beauty.

The Bay of Kotor is not technically a fjord but due to green mountains and an epic backdrop to the navy-blue waters of the bay, it bears a resemblance to one.

Full of ancient history and with a jaw dropping scenery the bay is one of Montenegro’s number one tourist attractions and holiday destination.

No place in Montenegro can offer such a diverse holiday as the Bay of Kotor.

2 days in Montenegro is not enough time to see everything, but it is enough time to enjoy a few of the many highlights.

Our Lovcen is also known as a symbol of freedom, as a "holy altar" where takes place the mausoleum of Peter II Petrovic Njegos, bishop, poet, and ruler of Montenegro.

With more than 200 sunny days, Herceg Novi is officially the sunniest city in Montenegro, and along with its gorgeous flora, tourist come to enjoy beautiful beach as well.

In addition to the incredible natural beauty, unique multi-millennial history and good food, we believe one cannot experience Montenegro properly if we do not understand the Montenegrin wine story well enough.

Montenegro may be small in terms of area, but it boasts stunning mountainous landscapes, dramatic coast lines, historic monuments and truly beautiful walled towns.
