Overview

History
Established in 1848, London Metropolitan University originated from the vision of the Bishop of London and Reverend Charles Mackenzie to educate young men through Metropolitan Evening Classes. Over the years, the university has experienced numerous milestones and challenges, shaping its proud history.
- 1848: Metropolitan Evening Classes commenced under the appeal to enhance the intellectual and moral conditions of the industrial classes. Prince Albert's patronage initiated an annual celebration of students' work three years later.
- 1861: Classes expanded at the City of London College, employing teachers, enrolling 800 students, and appointing a principal.
- 1896: The Northern Polytechnic Institution was established in Holloway, focusing on promoting industrial skills, general knowledge, health, and wellbeing.
- 1899: Sir John Cass founded the Technical Institute to provide practical education, evolving from a school to an institute.
- 1900: The Northern Polytechnic flourished, doubling student numbers by 1910 and offering evening degrees and research supervision.
- 1927: The department of navigation was established at the Sir John Cass Technical Institute, later expanding to full-time courses.
- 1940: City of London College faced destruction during bombing, relocating to Electra House, Moorgate, in 1944.
- 1950: Sir John Cass Technical Institute became Sir John Cass College, introducing innovative programs like radar equipment training.
- 1960: City of London College expanded significantly, while Shoreditch Technical Institute transformed into the London College of Furniture in 1964.
- 1965: The School of Art, Architecture, and Design was founded, emphasizing vocational relevance in education.
- 1971: City of London Polytechnic emerged, later merging with North London Polytechnic to form the Polytechnic of North London.
- 1990: London College of Furniture joined City of London Polytechnic, which attained university status in 1992 as London Guildhall University.
- 2002: London Guildhall University merged with the University of North London, forming London Metropolitan University, the UK's first such merger between universities. The following year, the Duke of Edinburgh awarded the university's first degree as its patron.
