Overclocking a graphic card is of more interest to gaming enthusiasts than overclocking a CPU.
What You Need to Overclock
Start by getting a motherboard and CPU compatible with overclocking, which means you have to get the proper generation of CPU to make this work. K designs and a motherboard with a Z' chipset will do for Intel CPUs. You can overclock an Intel Core i7-6950X with a Gigabyte Z390 Auorus Ultra motherboard.
A good quality PC cooler is also necessary. Keeping the CPU temperatures below 85 degrees Celsius is ideal. To do that, you need a reliable liquid cooling PC system. Ensure that there is an adequate thermal paste that's properly applied.
Overclocking Basics
Several interlocking systems operate at different rates to present a single digit. This figure represents system clockspeeds, the result of the simple multiplication of some key system settings.
The base clock is the term used to refer to the core speed value. Most such hardware has its base clock set at 100 MHz. Remember that most motherboard components that depend on base clock speeds cannot withstand tweaks to their core speed value.
Bump the CPU multiplier. The multiplier (ratio) is used to determine the maximum processing speed. Usually, this figure is around 30x-50x on most modern processors. For example, a 100 MHz core speed value with a 50x multiplier means the processor runs at 5,000 MHz or 5.0GHz. Because this value is for the processor alone, it doesn't affect other system parts that rely on stock or near-stock base clock to operate.
By gradually increasing the ratio from its default value to between 40x to 50x, you'll experience vastly improved processing speeds.
