Mera Peak, located in the Mahalangur section of the Himalayas within Nepal's Sagarmatha Zone, Sankhuwasabha district, stands majestically at 6,476 meters (21,247 ft). Classified as a trekking peak, Mera Peak boasts three primary summits: Mera North (6,476 meters), Mera Central (6,461 meters), and Mera South (6,065 meters), in addition to a smaller, distinct "trekking summit" visible from the south.

A Closer Look at Mera Peak

Historically, the height of Mera Peak has been misreported as 6,654 meters (21,831 ft) due to a mix-up with the nearby Peak 41. However, the correct altitude makes it the highest trekking peak in Nepal, offering a thrilling adventure for trekkers and climbers alike.

Rich History of Exploration

The region first saw extensive exploration by British expeditions in the early 1950s, with notable figures such as Edmund Hillary, Tenzing Norgay, Eric Shipton, and George Lowe contributing to its legacy. The first ascent of Mera Central was achieved on May 20, 1953, by Col. Jimmy Roberts and Sen Tenzing, who played a crucial role in establishing Nepal's trekking industry in the early 1960s. In recognition of his contributions, Roberts was posthumously awarded the "Sagarmatha (Everest) National Award" in 2005.

Mera North was first ascended by French climbers Marcel Jolly, G. Baus, and L. Honills in 1975, although some sources suggest an earlier ascent in 1973. Additionally, in 1986, Mal Duff and Ian Tattersall made the first ascent of the southwest pillar, a route approximately 1,800 meters (5,900 ft) in length and graded at ED inf, known for its exposure to serac falls.

Modern Milestones

Mera Peak continues to inspire climbers worldwide. In September 2017, Hari Budha Magar, a double above-knee amputee, summited Mera Peak, setting a remarkable record. More recently, on May 6, 2024, a team from Cyprus led by Alexis Economides set the Guinness World Record for the highest altitude fitness session on Mera Peak's summit, demonstrating the peak's ongoing appeal and versatility.

Climbing Routes and Breathtaking Views

The standard route to Mera Peak from the north involves high-altitude glacier walking, while the west and south faces offer more technically challenging routes. Mera Peak provides unparalleled 360-degree panoramic views of five of the world’s highest peaks: Mount Everest (8,848 meters), Kangchenjunga (8,586 meters), Lhotse (8,516 meters), Makalu (8,485 meters), and Cho Oyu (8,201 meters), along with numerous other peaks in the Khumbu region.
