Community Living Careers

To ensure the safety and wellbeing of the community that we have the pleasure and opportunity of being a part of, we will be following a community first approach to re-opening. Please read more about the phased re-opening for the Hailzaqv Territory.

If you are in search of a spirit bear and sighting of a baby orca this weekend or taking a break from workdays to kick back on the water while catching a fish or two or three, Shearwater resort is the place to be!

From gourmet meals served on the restaurant patio with the view of the great pacific waters to a casual stroll with an ice cream cone in hand while trying to spot the resident baldhead eagle named Sally; from watching kids play on the swing to kayaking around shearwater island; or just standing on the dock and seeing enthusiastic fishermen get off their boats to put their catch of the day on the scale, hearing their cheers and watching everyone hug and high five and congratulating each other on yet another successful fishing day, Shearwater is ready to welcome you into the community.

About Us

Our story begins with the property, which Shearwater is located on, being a former Second World War RCAF base, which housed over 1000 men and aircraft that patrolled the expansive coast of central British Columbia. In 1947, a large portion of that property was sold to Andrew Widsten, a visionary young man, whose Norwegian family first settled in Bella Coola. As a former officer of the RCAF and savvy businessman with an intimate knowledge of the area, Andrew recognized the need to establish a dedicated marine services business in this strategic location. For the next 20 years, Andrew developed the business and community delivering essential services to the area.

Our Services:

Today, Shearwater is a thriving small resort town, fully integrated marine service centre and outstanding tourist destination on the Central Coast. The company has over 100 employees and is the largest independent employer in the region. Shearwater has grown to become a regional service and supply centre, providing water taxi services, freight service, a fuel centre, grocery store, hardware store, and a post office. As well, it has become a thriving tourism destination offering accommodations, a large restaurant & bar, coastal wilderness tours, and a sportfishing business.

This is our story. The Shearwater story
