A player has traveled 950 kilometers, they must play a 50-kilometer card to reach exactly 1,000 kilometers. A 75- or 100-kilometer card cannot be used in this situation.
Hazard cards are played on opponents to interrupt their progress. If someone mille bornes rules receives a Flat Tire card, they cannot continue until they play a Spare Tire remedy. Likewise, an Out of Gas hazard requires a Gasoline card, while an Accident requires Repairs.
The Stop card halts a player's movement until they play a Roll card. Similarly, the Speed Limit card restricts mileage, allowing only 25- and 50-kilometer cards until an End of Limit card is played.
These hazards create constant interaction between players and encourage strategic use of resources.
Safety Cards
Safety cards are among the most valuable cards in Mille Bornes. Once played, they remain active for the rest of the game and cannot be removed.
The four standard safety cards are:
Right of Way
Driving Ace
Extra Tank
Puncture-Proof
Each safety card blocks its matching hazard permanently. Right of Way is especially powerful because it protects against both Stop and Speed Limit while allowing immediate movement without needing a Roll card.
Players can also earn bonus points by playing a safety card immediately after an opponent plays the matching hazard, a move known as a "Coup Fourré."
Winning the Game
A race ends when one player or team reaches exactly 1,000 kilometers. Afterward, points are calculated based on several factors, including total mileage, completed journey, safety cards played, Coup Fourré bonuses, and whether the winner completed the trip safely without using 200-kilometer cards in certain game variations.
