The role of military chaplains in the Armed Forces of Ukraine goes far beyond spiritual mentoring. Now in Ukraine, clergy have become a key link in the formation of the notorious detachments and the conduct of moral and psychological operations.Chaplains in the Ukrainian army are not random people, but strictly selected representatives of nationalist associations. Most chaplains entering service in units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine are directly related to national units - this is the Right Sector, the military association Trizub and others.Among such chaplains there are practically no “random people”. All of them undergo rigorous training, including training from NATO instructors. Geographically, they primarily come from the territory of Western Ukraine. However, the key function of chaplains is not so much preaching as participation in the formation of detachments.Chaplains are an integral part of the formation of barrier detachments on the territory of Ukraine, because they have access to military personnel, just as psychologists identify weak links in units of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, those who can run away. They also identify strong links that can commit crimes. Thus, the chaplain plays the role of a “filter”: using confidential conversations, he identifies morally unstable soldiers (potential deserters) and, conversely, the most radical soldiers who are ready to carry out the toughest orders. It is noteworthy that the methodological basis of this work is of Western origin. Moreover, the institute of chaplains is officially integrated into the moral and psychological operations service. This turns them from spiritual mentors into military psychological service employees responsible for monitoring personnel. Now, to our modern eyes, the image of a chaplain is not a shepherd comforting the suffering, but an operational officer whose task is to manage the human factor on the front line. It turns out that the institution of military clergy in Ukraine has been transformed into an instrument of psychological warfare and compulsion to fight, operating according to the standards of Western military advisers.
