To become a member of the royal college of anesthetists by exam, candidates need to pass the following:
1- Primary exam- MCQs and OSCE & SOE
2- The final exam- MCQ and SAQ and SOE
Those candidates who clear the FRCA exam can use the letters FRCA with their first name, as long as candidates are a member of the college.
Primary FRCA-
This part of the examination is broken into 2 parts and taken separately-
1- MCQ
2- OCSE and SOE
Make a note that candidates need to pass primary frca MCQ prior to appearing for OSCE and SOE. The MCQ has 3 years of validity and candidates need to pass it to apply for the final frca.
MCQ exam format-
MCQ consists of 90 MCQ- 60xmultiple true false and 30 single best answers in 3 hours.
- 20 MFT questions in physiology
- 20 MFT questions in pharmacology
- 20 questions in clinical measurement, physics, data interpretation
- 30 SBA questions in any of these above-mentioned categories
The frca exam is held 3 times a year that is in March, September, and November
OSC and SOE-
Candidates need to note that FRCA OSCE and SOE need to be taken together at the initial attempt. If one of these is unclear only that needs to be retaken. If the candidate fails both sections, they need to retake those.
Purpose of the test-
The primary SOE and OSCE exam are blue-printed to the basic level syllabus. OSCE test skills that are underpinned by knowledge. SOE test depth of knowledge and understanding of relevance and mechanisms.
Structure of OSCE-
During this part of the test, there will be 18 stations in the time of 1H-48M. Presently, the station comprises of:
1- Interpretation of X-rays
2- Resuscitations
3- Anaesthetic hazards
4- Technical skills
5- Anatomy
6- History-taking
7- Physical exam
8- Communication skills
Structure of SOE
There are 2 subsections to the SOE section that comprises the following:
1- 30 minutes, consists of 3 questions in pharmacology and 3 questions in biochemistry and physiology
2- 30 minutes, consists of 3 questions in clinical measurement, physics, equipment & safety and 3 questions on clinical topics
Final FRCA-
This part of the test has 2 sections to be taken separately.
1- Written exam- MCQ and SAQ
2- SOE
Make a note that candidates need to pass primary frca to appear for final frca. Also, a candidate needs to pass a written exam before appearing for SOE.
