Pregnancy Resource Center are an essential part of the reproductive health care system, ensuring access to safe, legal abortion services for women and families. When they are under threat, however, women may struggle to get the care they need. This can be especially true for low-income and Black and Latino populations, as well as undocumented individuals and people with limited access to health care services.
Lilith Clinic Providing Late-Term Abortion
Located in the heart of downtown Portland, the Lilith Clinic is a new, independent, places to get pregnancy test done late-term abortion facility that will open for patients . The new clinic provides a much-needed resource to the city’s already-established network of local abortion providers.
The closure of Lovejoy Surgicenter left a significant gap in access to third-trimester abortions in the greater Portland area. That was a problem for both patients and providers alike, as most of the other local abortion clinics only provide third-trimester procedures .
Since then, Lilith has been filling that void, bringing high-quality, medically necessary abortion care to an underserved region of the Portland metropolitan area. The clinic also serves individuals who live in neighboring states, such as Washington and Idaho, who had difficulty obtaining safe, affordable, third-trimester abortions in their home state.
To meet the needs of its growing client base, the clinic is raising funds for new medical equipment and training. Additionally, the clinic is launching an effort to support women in other states who are facing barriers to accessing abortion in Oregon. This is done by partnering with organizations like NWAAF, which offers mutual aid and other support for people who are experiencing barriers to getting an abortion.
Pro-Choice Voters Choosing to Protect Grant Community Members
In the current climate, Oregon is consistently pro-choice, and pro-choice voters across the country are fighting back against anti-choice policies that threaten abortion care and freedom of choice for women. In Portland, this includes the recent allocation of city funds to support abortion care and access.
While this budget allocation is not an ideal situation, it does represent a small step in the right direction for protecting access to safe and effective abortion services. It is a necessary response to the threat of anti-choice policies like Texas’s radical and extreme abortion ban.
If the anti-abortion movement continues to push for laws that restrict abortion, it will only exacerbate the barriers that women and families face in receiving safe, effective abortion care. These barriers can be in the form of travel restrictions, as well as inequities in access to health care services.
Having access to safe, reliable reproductive health care services is fundamental to a woman’s ability to live a full and healthy life.
The decision has prompted many health care providers to consider expanding their capacity to offer more abortion services in more complex, medically necessary cases. OHSU has responded to the challenge by investing in additional medical equipment and training providers from other states.
