Emotional Support Animals (ESAs) are animals that provide comfort and companionship to individuals with mental or emotional disabilities. They are not ‘pet’ animals and have different rights and requirements than service animals. To have an ESA, an individual must have a letter from a licensed mental health professional documenting the need for the animal are called online esa letter. The letter must be renewed every year and should be kept up to date.
ESAs are allowed on airplanes and in housing units that do not normally allow animals. The airline or housing unit may require additional documentation, such as a photograph of the ESA or proof of rabies shots, and may impose specific limits on the weight and size of the animal. Additionally, ESAs must be housebroken and under the control of their owner or handler.
