Dry skin is generally defined by a lack of oil in the skin. If you do suffer with dry skin, there are usually tell-tail signs. Your skin might feel rough, tight and have visibly dry patches (particularly on the cheeks). You might also be more prone to irritation and skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis, which can be more prevalent if your skin isn't sufficiently moisturised. A good way to test your skin is to take note of how it feels after you get out of the shower. Does your skin feel tight and slightly itchy? This can be a good indication that your skin is more on the dry side

Part of it is simply down to your skin type- some people naturally produce less oil and so are naturally more prone to tightness, dry patches and sensitivity. Your age might also come into itas we get older, our skin gets thinner and retains less moisture, meaning we often feel dryer and in need of richer skincare. However, dry skin can also be caused by seasonal factors. During the winter months, the cold weather, wind and dry air can leave even oily skins feeling parched. Central heating can also be a cause, as it reduces the humidity in the air. You might have also suffered some kind of stress to the skin, such as a reaction to a skincare product, sunburn or over-exfoliation, which can leave your skin dry and inflamed as it begins the healing process. This is generally 'short-term' dryness, and your skin will usually return to it's normal condition with time and some extra TLC.

Natural skincare can be really beneficial for dry skin, as many natural botanicals contain ingredients that protect skin from lost-moisture. Natural products generally avoid irritants too, such as high levels of alcohol, SLS, synthetic fragrance and colourants that can all lead to dryness and dehydration, particularly in a sensitive skin.

Plant-based oils are a great place to start to replace lost moisture in a dry skin, and are often rich in omegas and fatty acids to protect the skin. We love jojoba, apricot, evening primrose and argan oil. Ingredients rich in vitamins and antioxidants are also really beneficial for a dry skin, helping to protect against free radical damage. These include aloe vera, royal jelly and rose damask. Finally, look out for ingredients such as hyaluronic acid and glycerin- these are both natural humectants that attract moisture to the skin
