The phrase FEMA trailer is the proper name commonly given to a series of temporary manufactured dwellings usually designated to the displaced victims of national calamity by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The purpose of these dwellings is to offer temporary shelter to the homeless as well as to those families who are in need of a home but do not have the money for such. The manufactured dwelling trailers are manufactured in bulk and are designed in a manner that makes them capable of withstanding harsh weather conditions. They are then disassembled after use and re-assembled in a new form. It is these manufactured dwellings that are used as temporary shelters by the homeless.

There are many different types of these trailers available to choose from. Manufactured homes commonly referred to as FEMA trailers are designed in such a way that they provide maximum protection in times of hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, and other catastrophic weather conditions. The primary function of these manufactured dwellings is to provide protection against the destructive forces of nature. They are specifically engineered to withstand a direct impact from a tornado and to provide shelter to those in need of temporary shelter in flood damage. In cases where no other forms of permanent shelter can be provided for the homeless, the FEMA trailers are the only option.

In the case of a Class A trailer, the structure is of the highest quality and it is possible to accommodate up to four adults. Class B trailers on the other hand, are built to accommodate two adults and are normally used as an everyday travel trailer by families.

As is evident from the name, most FEMA trailers are manufactured in designated areas of the country. However, there are now a number of mobile home parks that are catering to the needs of people who do not wish to live in traditional campsites but who still want a place to stay in the event of a hurricane or flood. For example, during Hurricane Katrina several army troops had to evacuate their base due to flooding. Instead of staying in hotel accommodation, these soldiers went into a series of military trailer camps. The trailers provided them with the necessary warmth and support that they so desperately needed.
