What Is The Forth Worth Herd?
Fort Worth TX created The Herd to celebrate the city's sesquicentennial commemoration. A herd of 17 Texas Longhorns is driven along the Stockyards National Historic District twice a day. Each of these 17 steers represents a decade from Fort Worth's colorful past.
This herd is guided by a team of drovers clothed in authentic 19th-century attires. They uphold this event so much that every part of the cattle drive - hats, boots, chaps, or saddles - is historically accurate. And it was June 12, 1999, when the Fort Worth Herd made its first cattle drive.
What Happens In The Cattle Drive?
Experienced riders drive the herd of longhorns on East Exchange Avenue in the Stockyards. You can witness this procession from the sidewalk daily at 11:30 AM and 4 PM.
The herd is made up of Texas Longhorns are graciously donated by ranchers who support this program and want to share the western way of life with others. And although they are the friendly type of steers, you still need to be cautious around them because they can behave in unpredictable manners.
Can You Participate In The Cattle Drive?
No, you can't. Even if you are an experienced rider, you can't participate in the cattle drive. Only the Fort Worth Herd staff can ride, drive, and handle the horses and longhorns because they undergo extensive training. So for your safety, they do not let any visitors, even experienced riders, participate in the cattle drive. Remember that no matter how docile the longhorns may be, they are still animals. When their survival instincts kick in, whatever it does to nearby persons can be dangerous.
Can You Plan Events Near The Herd?
In rare cases, events like processions may follow the cattle drive. But for that to happen, all the longhorns must be inside their holding area. How about fireworks? Definitely not. Anything loud or intermittent is dangerous to the cattle and horses. In addition, horses can hit harmful objects, buildings, and fences as they run out of fear. These accidents cause horses to receive injuries such as broken limbs, sprains, and lacerations. For that reason, the Fort Worth Herd refrains from allowing events near the herd.
Does The Fort Worth Herd Make Special Appearances?
As Fort Worth TX official ambassadors, the Fort Worth Herd accepts special event bookings. But there are things you need to prepare before booking them. Since the appearance includes livestock, they must receive the insurance certificates three days before the event. This insurance covers commercial general liability, which provides property damage coverage and bodily injury not less than $1,000,000 combined single limit per appearance.

The Fort Worth Herd cattle drive is a free event; you can watch it just by standing on East Exchange Avenue.
