What is a Centrifugal/Atmospheric Degasser?

A centrifugal/atmospheric degasser is a gas treatment device used to remove

gaseous components from the drilling mud on oil rigs. This helps eliminate toxic and

dangerous gases from the mud, releasing them through a separate exhaust pipe.

Ideal centrifugal degassers are capable of handling muds with large densities and

viscosities.

Why is a centrifugal degasser necessary on an oil rig?

Centrifugal degassers create a safe environment on the oil rig by separating harmful

gases from the mud. Further, they help in stabilizing mud viscosity performance.

They are also crucial to achieve a high mud weight recovery.

Ultimately, centrifugal degassers lower the expenses of drilling operations on an oil

rig.

Principle

As the name suggests, centrifugal degassers utilize centrifugal forces to separate

gases from the mud fluid. The drilling mud is accelerated through the impeller of a

submerged centrifugal pump.

Exerting a centrifugal force on the drilling mud creates a large buoyant force on the

gas bubbles. These bubbles rise upwards to the surface, leaving the mud behind.

The turbulent flow of the released gas bubbles further breaks them down as the gas

finally vents out. The rapidly rotating impeller aids in the bubble breakdown.

A pressurizing unit, akin to an exhaust fan, draws in the gas into the discharge cone.

Thereafter, the gas reaches a gas manifold, and is subsequently vented out of the

system.

Installation and setup

Centrifugal degassers are installed after shale shakers on an oil rig. A regenerative

blower is also set up to create a low-power vacuum that can help vent out the

released gas.
