What is COVID-19?

A mutated coronavirus strain called SARS-CoV-2 that first surfaced in 2019 is responsible for the infectious disease known as COVID-19. It is a highly contagious droplet and aerosol infection affecting millions worldwide. The viral particles are released into the air when an infected person speaks, sneezes, laughs, breathes, etc. This causes the infection to spread to those nearby.   • Delta variants: This virus variant was among the most well-known to be classified as a "Variant of Concern" by the WHO, was even more virulent. The most dangerous virus variant among all was discovered for the first time in India in late 2020.
  • Omicron variants: In late November 2021, South Africa and Botswana reported the discovery of the first Omicron strain (BA.1), which quickly spread to nearby countries. In the US, the number of daily cases of Omicron infection had dramatically increased by December. Omicron subvariants BA.4 and BA.5 spread quickly and are very contagious. By the beginning of July 2022, one of those subvariants, BA.5, representing more than 50% of instances in the US, making it the dominant variant in this country.
