In the driest regions where water is many a time scarce with extreme temperature prevailing, there is a development that is changing lives and terrains in rural India. Project Oasis is an initiative created by people who decided they would help others by providing them with water – something that they may not have due to lack of it.
Their ambitious goal? To construct one thousand check dams by the year 2030 thus benefitting millions through improved water security. It is not an idea that can be brushed under the carpet as a mere impossibility. Over 350 check dam built they have realized the impact of their effort and initiatives. More than 400000 clientele have testified of their improved lives.
However, Project Oasis is not limited only to construction. It’s a shift towards community participation in decision-making processes of water management. Residents also participate alongside the engineers during construction of the dams down to selection of sites to construct the dams. I think this fosters ownership and pride and makes sure that these projects are long lasting for our generations.
The results have simply been phenomenal. What used to be dry riverbed is now able to support a new stream, and the farm fields are green, and people have a water source from their homes. The poor women who especially suffer most with water shortage now have ample time and more opportunity to be educated add to the economic productivity. School going children will not have to walk long distances just to fetch water for their needs.
What distinguishes Project Oasis is that it does not end at water. They uphold the tenets of the right development model, which advocates for a comprehensive development plan. Such initiatives involve educating the public via informational campaigns, investing in healthcare, and promoting ecological farming methods. It’s about building an environment that sustainable economy and, consequently, people’s communities could live in.
It is an inspiring project that shows that only innovation and a willingness to work together to face adversity can save the situation. Such proves that something beautiful can happen if only people are willing to join hands and make a difference in the life of other people.
Project Oasis is not only about constructing dams, what they are doing is constructing dreams, future, and a better tomorrow for rural India. A single family at a time, it is showing the world that no matter the hurdles life takes place.
