On this December 2022, we saw the premier of the new version of Pinocchio, by Guillermo del Toro, and the truth is that the whole world was left with its mouth open at the level of production in every way possible.
In this regard, Guillermo himself has spoken about what working in animation means to him, that it is not a genre, but filmmaking in itself and of all the possibilities it has that haven’t been explored yet because there is a belief that this is only material for children’s films and it is underestimated with this idea.
Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio is not necessarily a children’s film, and if it were it shouldn’t be under appreciated, on the contrary, in a world filled with bland, empty content that doesn’t challenge children’s’ intelligence, this film invites us to reflect, it questions general beliefs, it is filled with historical references and, even at the end, it gives us a lesson on transcendence.
This film also rescues the purely artisanal work of animation, made frame by frame, without making use of the great virtues of digitalization, which has given us very realistic scenes to things that no one believes anymore. In this sense, the film is amazing, not because it seems real, but because it comes across to the audience as empathic, close and very warm hearted.
The world of animation has evolved enormously in the last decade and has stopped being a simple genre for children, now we see films with all types of themes, beloved stories that do not sacrifice a well-constructed script in exchange for a production loaded with technology, but with a lot of manual work and genius minds in charge.
And it is the new generations that have slowly taken over of the professional world of animation; Olmo Cuarón, the son of Alfonso Cuarón, is already standing out as an animator at the age of 17 and has shown his own work in his YouTube channel, and he has also said publicly that he wishes to work in this professionally.
There is no question that Olmo Cuarón is following his father’s footsteps, as well as his friend’s, Guillermo del Toro, who is also a great promoter of the work of young people in the world of film.
This movie is worthwhile, and it also reminds us that there is still much more to see when it comes to films, not everything has been set, and more works that surprise us will continue to arise, and surely in a few years we will begin to see films made by the new generations of animators, directors and producers, as in the case of Olmo Cuarón who has already shown that he will stand out in the world of the big screen.
