What Are Wisdom Teeth?

Wisdom teeth or third molars are a set of 4 teeth that grow around the time a person matures into becoming an adult, around the age of 17 years to 24 years. These are placed one each on the edges of both, upper and lower jaw. Anthropologically speaking, the purpose of these teeth actually lies in the story of our evolution. Our ancestors were cave dwellers who ate raw meat for survival. These third molars were an extra surface for grinding meat before it was swallowed, thus making it easier to digest and derive energy from.

And while our ancestors had bigger mouths and more space in their jaws, it made sense for them to have these. With time, we have eliminated the need to eat raw meat and our jaws have also reduced in size. This means that there is not much space to accommodate 4 more wisdom teeth in our mouth. And while it may be true that we humans don’t need wisdom teeth anymore, evolution has made sure that we do have them.

Wisdom Teeth Issues

The eruption of wisdom teeth in the mouth with limited space may either be totally breezy for a few people, while it may be hugely problematic for a number of others. They may cause crowding in the teeth, cause a misalignment in the shape of our teeth, or may get impacted due to improper eruption While many of these may not be issues to oral health, they are a cause of other conditions that actually are.

Because of these conditions arising and evolving into a serious problem, the ideal treatment for it is to get a removal for the affected or all wisdom tooth. However, as mentioned above, there are people who are not affected by this at all, which means that removal of wisdom teeth is not recommended to everyone. It is only for people where it develops into a problematic situation. If you have symptoms like these, you must immediately go see a good dentist:

  • Red or Swollen Gums
  • Tenderness or bleeding in gums
  • Pain and swelling in Jaw
  • Difficulty in opening mouth

All said, it is an important part of growing to get or not get your wisdom teeth. Evolution has taken care of some of us who are never born with wisdom teeth, while also giving other people enough space in their mouth to accommodate in case they get their wisdom teeth. For those of us who are not gifted with either of these, we have the wisdom teeth removal treatment.
