Forgiveness

Eros – Thanatos
Eros, the life instinct, is one of the two fundamental drives that Freud believed to exist within each of us. It relates to survival, propagation, sex, and other life-producing drives. This drive is opposed by Thanatos, the death instinct. Thanatos can be a driving force that causes homicide and suicide. It is also the instinct that leads to anger, aggression, and violence.
In a way, Thanatos is the opposite of Eros. Thanatos opposes the creation of higher unities and focuses on self-destruction instead of creating new ones.
Thanatos was introduced into Freud’s theory by Wilhelm Stekel and Paul Federn as a complementary term to Eros. Both terms were eventually embraced by later psychoanalysts such as Jacques Lacan and Melanie Klein.
According to Freud, Thanatos represents the desire to return to an inorganic state. This desire is often triggered by traumatic experiences and can be expressed in repeated dreams that take people back to the events they experienced.
However, Freud was careful to distinguish Thanatos from Eros and not equate the two. He was concerned that a theological or vitalistic interpretation of Thanatos would push him into a theological interpretation of Eros and lead him into a vitalistic interpretation of life, which he did not want to do.
The relationship between the two instincts was not easy for Freud to understand. It was not until he developed his theory of the ego that he was able to see the relationship between these instincts and their interactions with each other.
This theory of the ego was first described in Beyond the Pleasure Principle and later in The Interpretation of Dreams and The Analysis of the Ego. The theory was later developed into a more generalized model that included the concept of group psychology.
In this context, the theory of Eros was expanded to include an idea that sexuality/Eros was not just about genetic procreation but was a fundamental process of creating higher unities. This is similar to the way that friendship is a higher unity between individual beings.
