Methanol, also known as wood alcohol or methyl alcohol, is a colorless, volatile and flammable liquid with a distinctive pungent odor. Chemically, it is the simplest alcohol, containing a single carbon atom bonded to three hydrogen atoms and one hydroxyl group. Production

Methanol finds a wide variety of uses across industries due to its physical and chemical properties. It is used as a solvent and antifreeze in automotive coolants. Methanol to Olefins (MTO) process converts it into petrochemical feeds like ethylene and propylene which are further used to produce plastics, fibers and additional chemicals. It is increasingly being utilized as a transportation fuel and blended with gasoline to produce M85 fuel. It can also be directly used as fuel in specially designed vehicles or converted into dimethyl ether for use as fuel or propellant.

While it offers potential as a clean fuel alternative, a few technological and infrastructure challenges currently limit its widespread adoption:
- Vehicle Compatibility: Existing gasoline vehicles require modifications or redesign to run on its fuel. Dedicated M100 vehicles need to be developed for maximum efficiency.
- Fuel Infrastructure: Establishing a seamless supply chain and developing adequate refueling infrastructure comparable to gasoline remains an obstacle.
- Toxicity: Methanol is toxic to humans even in low doses if ingested. Strict safety measures are needed during production, distribution and vehicle refueling.
- Cost: Currently natural gas based methanol is cheaper than biomass routes. Large scale commercial production needs to bring costs down further.
Methanol holds promise as a potential transportation fuel of the future due to its domestic availability, compatibility with existing infrastructure and lower carbon emissions profile compared to gasoline.
