A hospital emergency room visit in the United States costs about $2,200 on average, based on UnitedHealthcare, the largest health insurer in the country. The cost of an emergency room visit can sometimes exceed these estimates due to the severity of your condition and the diagnostic testing and treatments you undergo.

Different levels of care are provided in the emergency room depending on the reason for the visit. The following are some of the most common problems that bring people to the emergency room.

New York State conducted a study that found that 25 conditions are most commonly associated with emergency room visits. Most visits are either non-emergent, treatable by primary care, or urgent but avoidable. Moreover, more than half of 2018’s 7 million ER visits could have been handled elsewhere, according to another study.
