While the reception of Artificial Intelligence by the general public has been fairly mixed (and for good reason), A.I. is, without a doubt, one of the most powerful tools we have today that when used effectively, can help any task feel small.
In the realm of academics, the usage of ChatGPT is often frowned upon, with many of its known use cases being in the creation of academic essays and even research papers, which is inherently dishonest to your academic institution. However, a way to use ChatGPT that isn’t often mentioned is its ability to be utilized as a tutor.
I, as a student in my final year of junior high, frequently use this A.I. tool as a way to hone my knowledge. Most especially when I can’t seem to grasp the concept of a subject and have no one to ask.
Let’s say that you’re having trouble understanding the concept of convection currents. A way to solve this difficulty is by hopping onto ChatGPT and asking the A.I. to explain the topic to you. The way the A.I. responds is completely dependent on how you ask. For example, if you want the A.I. to respond to you in a way that is brief and easy to grasp, you may want to throw in the words “explain it simply and briefly.”
And if you still don’t understand, asking the A.I. to explain it even more simply is easier than doing all of your homework in one day.
My discovery of this way to use ChatGPT has ultimately made it easier for me to learn any topic that is thrown at me, and has led to me being able to explain many topics during class without much difficulty. Of course, given as it is Artificial Intelligence, verifying the information that the bot gives you is still just as important as it would be if you were to do your own research.
Still, however, we must remain critical of Artificial Intelligence. While it is extremely useful for things such as this, there are many reasons to criticize it, such as the ethicality of A.I. art, and A.I.’s capability to be utilized for criminal activity, such as creating deepfakes to destroy a person’s image. As students, we must be mindful of how we utilize what we have, remembering that everything must be used ethically, and not to be dishonest in our work.
