The Indian men's team is currently touring Australia to play a series of three ODIs and five T20Is. After losing the first two ODIs, the Indian team has already lost the ODI series, and now all fans are focused on the five-match T20I series starting on October 28th. This series is also important because in just a few months, India will host the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026, which will be played in February 2026. This World Cup will be jointly hosted by India and Sri Lanka. As in previous editions, 20 teams will participate in this marquee ICC event.
The T20 World Cup Qualifiers were recently held, and the names of all 20 teams were confirmed. In addition to host India and co-host Sri Lanka, the tournament will feature teams from Australia, England, New Zealand, South Africa, West Indies, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Zimbabwe, USA, Ireland, Netherlands, Canada, Italy, Namibia, Nepal, Oman, and UAE.
The tournament format will remain the same as in 2024. The 20 teams will be divided into four groups of five each. The top two teams from each group will advance to the Super 8, which will then be divided into two groups. The top two teams from each Super 8 group will play in the semi-finals, with the winners of the two semi-finals competing for the trophy in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 final.
Due to an agreement between India and Pakistan (that neither India nor Pakistan will tour Pakistan until 2027), Pakistan will play all its matches in Sri Lanka. If Pakistan reaches the final, the final will also be held in Sri Lanka.
The Indian team, in addition to being the hosts, is also the defending champion of the tournament. India, under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma, won the T20 World Cup 2024, remaining undefeated throughout the tournament. With the tournament being played at home, all Indian cricket fans are hopeful that India will successfully defend its title and win the World Cup.
The first edition of the T20 World Cup was hosted by South Africa in 2007, and India won it. Subsequently, Pakistan won the title in 2009, England in 2010, West Indies in 2012, Sri Lanka in 2014, West Indies in 2016, Australia in 2021, England in 2022, and India in 2024. Thus, the T20 World Cup has been successfully held nine times, but no team has ever been able to defend the title as defending champion. Now it remains to be seen whether Team India will be able to defend the title at home. However, no host team has ever won the T20 World Cup.
