They are basically coils of wire that wrap around the lead, as with shielding they reduce the effects of electromagnetic interference. Ferrites are a very inexpensive way of reducing interference on an existing lead, they can be bought from specialist electronic retailers as an aftermarket addition, they are simply placed around your existing cable.
