There are a few reasons for replacing your monitor cable, maybe you have lost the original, it may well have been damaged, but by far the most common reason for buying a new monitor cable is the need for a longer lead. But would you know what to look for in a new VGA cable?
By far the most important component of a monitor cable is the shielding, the shielding, as the name suggests, shield the cable. One of the major factors for poor image quality is interference from other devices or leads in the near vicinity. Shielded leads have a layer between the internal cables and that protects against electromagnetic interference or EMI. The shielding usually consists of a layer of aluminium foil, on single shielded cables this layer is usually wrapped around the inside of the PVC jacket. Double shielded cables will have an additional layer wrapped around the individual internal cores of the cable. If you are looking for a long cable run, over 5 meters you should certainly be looking for double shielding.
Another factor that affects image quality is the use of Ferrite Suppressors; these barrel shaped beads are placed around the lead on both ends. They are basically coils of wire that wrap around the lead, as with shielding they reduce the effects of electromagnetic interference. Ferrites are a very inexpensive way of reducing interference on an existing lead, they can be bought from specialist electronic retailers as an aftermarket addition, they are simply placed around your existing cable.
