The Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) is a federal agency whose mission is to protect the trust assets of American Indians and Alaska Natives. Founded in 1824, it is a department of the U.S. Department of Interior. Since then, it has evolved as the Federal government's policies have changed.
Today, Bureau of works with tribes on tribal governance, justice, and natural resources management programs. It is the principal player in the relationship between the United States and the tribal community. A majority of its employees are American Indians.
During World War II, the FBI was responsible for tracking down draft evaders and investigating suspected communist activity in the U.S. It was also responsible for collecting intelligence. In the 1990s, the FBI adopted programs to combat terrorism.
The Bureau of Administration provides support to the Department of State, the embassies, and the consulates. Some of its programs include procurement, official records, language services, and logistics for special conferences. Among its other programs are domestic emergency management, setting allowance rates for U.S. Government personnel abroad, and domestic real property management.
In addition to these core services, the Bureau of Industry and Security supports the advancement of the U.S. national security agenda by implementing export controls and maintaining effective treaty compliance systems.
