Breast development, known medically as thelarche, typically begins between the ages of 8 and 13. The process can be divided into five distinct stages, referred to as the Tanner stages. In Stage 1, there is no visible change as the breasts remain flat, similar to a child’s chest. Stage 2 marks the beginning of breast budding, where small lumps, or buds, form under the nipples, which might feel tender. In Stage 3, the breasts and areolas enlarge further without much separation. Stage 4 involves the areolas and nipples forming a secondary mound above the breast level. Finally, Stage 5 sees the maturation of the breasts to their adult size and shape, with the areolas blending into the general contour of the breast.
