An industrial gas detector is an instrument used in industry to continuously monitor and detect flammable toxic and hazardous gases and to generate audible and visual alarms to alert personnel to the presence of these hazards. These gases may be flammable, such as a mixture of hydrocarbon gases in the air, or flammable solvent vapors, which may be generated by solvent spills or leaks, or the gases may be toxic substances such as carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, chlorine or ammonia. Industrial gas detectors can also monitor oxygen levels in areas where inert gases may pose a potential risk of displacing oxygen in the ambient air where personnel are present.

1.Components of an industrial gas detector:

Industrial gas detectors have several components, which are gas sensors, detectors, transmitters or controllers, and a system that provides alarm notification, which can be a facility DCS or PLC system. Industrial gas detection systems can be as small as a single point gas detection system that monitors a single hazardous gas, or they can consist of hundreds of gas detectors that monitor multiple combustible and toxic gases, such as methane, hydrogen sulfide, and possibly carbon monoxide, oxygen, and benzene at hazardous levels throughout the facility in an oil refinery.

2.Due to the presence of hazardous materials in a facility, industrial gas detectors are often supervised as a required safety system. Because an industrial gas detector is considered a safety system, in many cases it is installed as a stand-alone safety system and provides redundancy to the facility's control system. There, the process is monitored and any industrial gas detector alarms may be required to shut down the process to reduce further leaks or spills and to control the hazards detected by the industrial gas detector.

3.Types of industrial gas detectors

Industrial gas detection utilizes a variety of sensor technologies, such as electrochemical sensors, catalytic bead combustible sensors, infrared

combustible sensors and photoelectric ion or PID sensors, all of which have their own unique detection characteristics and are selected based on the target gas to be detected through industrial gas detectors.
