Discovering the Hidden Trail to Mardi Himal Base Camp

Introduction: A Quiet Trail to a Grand View

I had heard whispers about Mardi Himal Base Camp—a quieter trail near the Annapurna range. So we packed our bags and decided to see what the silence was all about. And we were not disappointed. The path was calm, the forests thick with moss and birdsong, and the views—stunning. This trek felt like a secret waiting to be discovered, and the best part was how peaceful it all felt compared to the more crowded trails.

What Is the Mardi Himal Base Camp Trek?

The Mardi Himal Base Camp trek is one of Nepal’s newer routes. It leads to the foot of Mardi Himal (5,587 m), a striking peak just east of Annapurna South and Machapuchare (Fishtail). The base camp sits at 4,500 meters, offering sharp, close-up views of the giants without the heavy foot traffic of other treks.

Unlike Everest Base Camp or Annapurna Circuit, this trail still holds its wild charm. We hiked through dense forests, walked narrow ridgelines, and passed only a handful of other trekkers. It felt like the mountains were all ours.

Distance, Duration, and Altitude

  • Starting Point: Kande (1,770 m) or Phedi, both close to Pokhara
  • Ending Point: Usually Sidhing or Landruk
  • Total Distance: Around 45 km (round trip)
  • Duration: 4 to 6 days
  • Highest Point: Mardi Himal Base Camp (4,500 m)

We took five days in total, with time to rest and enjoy the views. The trail climbs fast but offers plenty of stops—Forest Camp, Low Camp, High Camp, and finally the base camp itself.

Highlights Along the Trail

Every day felt different. We began in green forests filled with wildflowers and slowly climbed above the tree line. One of my favorite sections was the narrow ridge leading to High Camp (3,580 m). On both sides, clouds drifted below us, and snow peaks stood sharp against the sky.

Reaching Mardi Himal Base Camp early in the morning, we saw Machapuchare glowing in the first light. It felt unreal. The quiet, the cold wind, the thin air—it all came together in a moment I’ll never forget. A guide nearby called the scene "cloud theatre"—and it really did feel like a show just for us.

Best Time to Trek

We went in April, and the trail was lined with blooming rhododendrons. The skies were mostly clear, and the temperatures were perfect for hiking.
The best seasons are:

  • Spring (March–May) for flowers and fresh air
  • Autumn (September–November) for crisp views and dry trails

Tips for Fellow Trekkers

  • Start early each day to avoid afternoon clouds
  • Layer your clothing—mornings are cold, but afternoons warm up
  • Hydrate well to adjust to the altitude
  • Take your time—there’s no need to rush this magical trail
  • Watch the stars—the sky at High Camp is full of sparkle

Final Thoughts

The Mardi Himal Base Camp trek is perfect for those looking for beauty without crowds. It’s short, scenic, and soulful. We didn’t just hike; we wandered through silence, watched the mountains breathe, and shared laughter in small tea houses along the way.

If you're looking for a hidden gem in the Himalayas, this is it. The trail may be short in length, but it’s deep in wonder.
