Trekking in the Everest region has always been a dream for me, but this time, we wanted something more than just the classic Everest Base Camp trail. That’s why we took on the Three Passes Trek Nepal, and I can confidently say it was the most challenging and rewarding trek I’ve ever done. With high mountain passes, quiet trails, stunning views, and small villages, this trek gave us everything we hoped for—and so much more.

We didn’t rush. We took our time, soaked in the scenery, and tested our limits. If you’re looking for a true Himalayan adventure, this trek has it all.
What Makes the Three Passes Trek Special
The Three Passes Trek is known for its three high-altitude passes: Kongma La (5,535m), Cho La (5,420m), and Renjo La (5,340m). Crossing all three connects some of the most beautiful parts of the Everest region, including Everest Base Camp, Gokyo Lakes, and remote Sherpa villages.
What we loved most about this trek was how wild and remote it felt. Even though we crossed paths with other trekkers, many sections were peaceful and untouched. The landscape kept changing—from dense forests to rocky glaciers to turquoise lakes. Every day felt like a new chapter in an epic story.
Starting the Journey from Lukla
Just like most treks in the Everest region, our journey began with a flight to Lukla. The excitement kicked in as soon as we landed. From there, we walked through small villages, crossed hanging bridges, and made our way to Namche Bazaar.
Namche is always a highlight. It’s the perfect mix of mountain culture, comfort, and altitude adjustment. We stayed there for a couple of nights, explored nearby viewpoints, and got ready for the adventure ahead.
Crossing the Three Passes
Each of the three passes offered its own challenge and beauty.
- Kongma La was the first and highest. We left before sunrise and climbed slowly. The path was rocky and steep, but the views from the top made it all worth it.
- Cho La was icy and dramatic. We trekked across a glacier, carefully stepping over frozen terrain. It felt like we had entered another world.
- Renjo La was my personal favorite. The climb was steady, and when we reached the top, we saw the entire Gokyo Valley below us. The lakes sparkled under the sun, and Everest stood proudly in the background.
Each pass tested our endurance but also gave us unforgettable memories.
Stunning Views and Peaceful Places
Along the way, we stayed in quiet teahouses and met kind, welcoming people. The Gokyo Lakes were a highlight—calm, deep blue, and surrounded by snowy peaks. We spent a day resting there and even climbed Gokyo Ri for more breathtaking views.
We also visited Everest Base Camp and climbed Kala Patthar. Both spots gave us different perspectives of Everest, and the feeling of standing so close to the world’s highest peak never gets old.
Is This Trek for You?
The Three Passes Trek Nepal is not easy. It demands good fitness, mental strength, and the ability to handle altitude. But if you’re ready for a challenge, it’s the best way to experience the Everest region in full.
We carried light packs, took slow steps, and kept encouraging each other. That made all the difference.
Final Thoughts
Looking back, the Three Passes Trek Nepal gave us more than we expected. It was tough, yes—but it was also peaceful, beautiful, and deeply fulfilling. We saw more than just mountains. We discovered a quiet strength inside ourselves and found joy in every sunrise, every step, and every shared meal in a mountain teahouse.
If you're ready to go beyond the usual and dive deep into the heart of the Himalayas, this trek is waiting for you.
