There are many Bedouins in Petra, its indigenous inhabitants. 30 years ago they lived right here in the caves. But then the Jordanian government decided to develop Petra as a tourist site and built a village nearby for the Bedouins. Now they spend the night there, and work in Petra: they ride tourists on camels, help climb a rock opposite Al-Khazneh, and sell souvenirs and spices. Everyone is thrown to work: adults, the elderly, and children, who can be seen here with a cigarette and on a donkey.
They say Petra is no less beautiful at night than during the day. The path to Al-Khazneh is illuminated with small paper lanterns. We did not wait for the night - which now, of course, we regret.
Wadi Ram
Another famous tourist attraction in Jordan is the Wadi Rum desert. She delighted us no less than Petra. This is not a desert in the usual sense - a horizon of infinity and dull mountains of sand. Wadi Rum has many red rocks and bizarre stones, so it looks more like Mars than Earth. Not surprisingly, Transformers, The Martian, Last Days on Mars and other films about the red planet were filmed here. You won’t be able to ride around Wadi Rum on your own: you can only be here with a guide. We took a tour from a tour operator. It included a transfer, a trip through the desert in pickup trucks and dinner in a Bedouin village that stews lamb right in the ground.
The Dead Sea
The Dead Sea dries up: every year it recedes from the coast by a meter. Tourists of chain hotels, once built on the first coastline, now walk about 150 meters to the beach, although earlier hotels were located right on the coast.
The Dead Sea is a special place unlike any other in the world. The water in it is more like olive oil. You can't drown, dive, swim or splash around in it. The water is so salty that if it gets on the mucous membrane, it will burn very much. Therefore, lifeguards with a bottle of fresh water are on duty on the shore, ready to wash the eyes of tourists.
