UNStudio has been announced as the winner of the international competition "Un Iași pentru Viitor" to design a new residential district in the historical center of Iași, Romania. For this competition, organized by Iulius company, four offices have been invited to participate, Foster + Partners, MVRDV, UNStudio, and Zaha Hadid Architects.

The main challenge of the competition was to design a building that would fit in with a complex urban environment filled with historic monuments of various ages, new archaeological discoveries, and open public spaces and gardens.

The winning proposal, titled “Bridging Time, Bridging Communities,” seeks to provide a cohesive response to the site’s unique characteristics.

UNStudio is a global network that specializes in architecture, interior design, product design, urban development, and infrastructure projects. It has six international full-service offices in Amsterdam, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Frankfurt, Dubai, and Melbourne.

The competition asked participants to design a modern architectural complex that would complete the current urban landscape of downtown Iaşi, defined by iconic landmarks of various architectural ages.

The jury referred to UNStudio’s project as “the most complete and balanced answer to the entire set of criteria in the competition theme.” The project was built around the principle of “developing around the theme of City Horizon.”

The complex will include both residential and public spaces. The volumetric solution takes into account the city’s skyline and aims to be a subtle insertion. The lower levels are intended to allow pedestrian circulation throughout the development and to encourage connections from the Sf. Andrei neighborhood to Palace Square, one of the city’s most prominent public spaces.

The site’s complex topography was also a deciding factor, as the various terraces contribute to the creation of a green oasis in the complex’s center.

UNStudio has also designed famous structures such as:

  • The Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart
  • The Four Frankfurt mixed-use complex
  • The Arnhem Central Station, the Doha Metro Station
  • The Erasmus Bridge in Rotterdam
