In the ongoing pursuit of ensuring a clean and sustainable environment for its residents, Chandigarh is making significant strides towards effective waste management. Recently, the Governor of Punjab and UT Administrator, Banwarilal Purohit, visited the Dadumajra dumping ground and legacy mining site, accompanied by notable figures including Mayor Anup Gupta, UT Adviser Dharam Pal, and the Local Government Secretary IAS Nitin Yadav, among others. The purpose of this visit was to assess the progress made in clearing the legacy waste from the site and to ensure that Chandigarh moves forward in its journey towards cleaner surroundings.
One of the primary concerns raised by the governor was the well-being of Dadumajra's residents. Expressing his worry over the health and hygiene implications for the community, Purohit urged the responsible authorities to expedite the removal of refuse-derived fuel (RDF) that had accumulated within the dumping ground's boundary walls. RDF, derived from a variety of waste sources, poses a potential hazard to both the environment and human health.
MC Commissioner and CSCL CEO Anindita Mitra shared that significant progress has already been made. The legacy waste mining of 5 lakh tonnes has been successfully accomplished as part of the Smart City Mission. Efforts are now being concentrated on lifting the RDF that has been stockpiled at the site, enabling the reclamation of approximately 20 acres. To level the area, soil from Patiala ki Rao will be utilized. Nitin Kumar Yadav's presence and guidance during these discussions served as a driving force to ensure that the required clearances for soil lifting were obtained promptly, in order to expedite the reclamation process.
IAS Nitin Yadav and the other officials are actively working on setting up a temporary composting plant, along with the reconstruction of the fallen boundary wall. Also, Governor Purohit highlighted the necessity of bio-remediation efforts for legacy waste and the establishment of integrated solid waste management plants. These measures, when realized, will undoubtedly contribute to a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable environment for Dadumajra and its residents.
