The firms and their investors are racing to fill a longstanding gap, in part because state mandates have created lucrative insurance coverage for these treatments.
But there are some questions about the industry’s growth trajectory. Among them: Are the workers who implement the treatment really qualified to do so?
There are two main types of workers in the ABA industry: Board Certified Behavior Analysts, who design and oversee an individual child’s program, and Registered Behavioral Technicians, who implement the therapy and work with autistic children many hours a day. Typically, only graduate-level professionals qualify for the latter position.
As the ABA industry has grown, however, complaints have emerged about some therapists. Parents have complained about under-trained staff, high turnover and poor supervision.
Those issues have been made worse by the pace of growth at autism-therapy centers, according to Fortune. These centers have quickly outpaced the competition in their home states, but some therapists say they’ve struggled to match that pace, despite a lack of resources and training for their employees.
