The 3D survey method contributes to the protection of wildlife in world heritage sites

In the Three Parallel Rivers of Yunnan Protected Areas, which is a UNESCO world heritage site, Chinese researchers are using 3D satellite images to monitor and conserve the local biodiversity.

This novel approach to surveying has been given the name "3D-map-based interview" survey.

According to Xiao Wen, the head of the Institute of Eastern Himalaya Biodiversity Research at Dali University, it is an effective tool for collecting local knowledge on biological information over large areas. This information is then followed up with field investigation and data analysis.

Interviewees use three-dimensional satellite images that display information about the surrounding terrain to pinpoint the exact locations of rare wild animals that they have seen.

In order to collect information on their population and distribution, records are kept.

The next step for the researchers is to use remote sensing 3D Survey to make predictions and evaluations on the habitats of endangered species, and they suggest protective measures.

Since 2016, more than thirty significant research projects have been carried out in the Three Parallel Rivers of Yunnan Protected Areas in order to monitor and protect wild animals. Some of these animals include the Myanmar snub-nosed monkey, the Yunnan golden hair monkey, the snow leopard, and the Mishmi takin, which is an endangered goat-antelope.

At the location that is a world heritage site, the beginnings of a network for long-term ecological monitoring can be seen.

The Three Parallel Rivers of Yunnan Protected Areas are comprised of sections of the upper reaches of three rivers that originate on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. These rivers are the Jinsha, Lancang, and Nujiang rivers. The protected areas cover a total area of 1.7 million hectares.

The site, which accounts for less than 0.4 percent of China's total land area, is home to more than a quarter of the animal species that can be found in China.

It is one of the most biologically diverse temperate regions in the world and a major centre for biodiversity in China.

Due to the installation of infrared cameras in strategic locations, the monitoring network also contributes to the reduction of illegal hunting and fishing in the region.

According to Xiao, "it is essential to have cutting-edge technologies and research methods, and to carry out long-term, methodical, in-situ scientific monitoring."
