Anthony Rendon (Angels), who is considered the worst "eat and run" in MLB history, is expected to be released.
The Orange County Register, a leading local outlet, recently reported that Rendon could be fully released despite having $38 million remaining on his contract until next season. "It's possible the Angels could release him this winter," the outlet wrote.
Rendon, the Angels' third baseman, has not played much for the team in recent years. He missed all of the 2025 season with a left hip injury and even underwent surgery. After joining the Angels for seven years and $245 million, he hasn't been able to be productive in the lineup, even when he's healthy.
Since joining the Angels, Rendon has appeared in just 257 games, a record of less than two seasons in his six-year contract. He hit .242/.348/.369 with 22 home runs and 125 RBIs for the Angels. He recorded a bWAR of 3.9 for the Angels, more than half of which was achieved in his first season with the Angels in 2020.
Rendon was an All-Star with the Washington Nationals, a two-time Silver Slugger Award winner, and played a key role in his team's 2019 World Series win. He left the Nationals and moved to the Angels.
In February 2024, before he suffered a hip injury, Rendon came to the media attention by talking about how important baseball is to him. "Baseball has never been a top priority for me," he said. "This is a job. I do this for a living. My faith and my family take precedence over this job. If baseball is a priority, I'm leaving."
It is no exaggeration to say that Rendon's recruitment was a complete failure for the Angels, who hoped to end the long drought of frustration with making the playoffs.
